About Mazu:
Mazu (媽祖) is a Chinese sea goddess who is worshipped as the protector of sailors, fishermen, and travelers. She is also known by several other names and titles, such as Tianhou (天后), meaning "Empress of Heaven", or A-ma (阿媽), meaning "Grandmother". Mazu is a deified young woman named Lin Mo who is believed to have lived in the 10th century on Meizhou Island, where she dedicated herself to helping people in need and died attempting to rescue shipwreck victims at the age of 27. Local people then regarded her as the goddess of the sea who could bring peace, fortune and good luck.
Mazu is widely revered in Southern China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, and Southeast Asia, especially among coastal communities. There are many temples and festivals dedicated to her worship. Mazu is often depicted wearing a red robe and a crown, holding a tablet or a scepter. She is sometimes accompanied by two guardian generals, Qianliyan (千里眼) and Shunfeng'er (順風耳), who can see and hear everything. Source: wikipedia.org
